The Similan Islands – Recent sightings

Diving in Thailand is probably on the must-do agenda for every diver. With interesting topography created by the rocky boulders, alongside excellent marine life, it is easy to see why. Whilst venturing around the Similan Islands S/Y Phinisi encountered some incredible sighting we just had to share with you. The highlights included mantas, Napoleon wrasse, sharks as well as huge schools of hunting trevallies.

Sightings

Richelieu Rock

The marine life at Richelieu Rock is prolific thanks to the surrounding deep waters full of nutrients. Big and small fish are attracted to this limestone pinnacle for provision of food and shelter.
• Diving: Pinnacle
• Current: Mild
• Sightings: Ornate ghost pipefish, tiger egg cowries, harlequin shrimps, schooling trevallies, rainbow runners, emperor fish, barracudas and 2 ribbon eels.

North Point

Venture through large granite boulders covered with gorgonian fans. North Point offers everything one can expect from diving in the Similans: lush,colourful corals, beautiful macro and large pelagic fish.
• Diving: Reef
• Current: Mild
• Sightings: Large sting rays, turtles, Napoleon wrasse and a very rare encounter with a manta in this dive site.

Koh Bon West Ridge

Vertical walls, beautiful corals and good chances to dive with mantas attracts divers to the west ridge of Koh Bon Island.
• Diving: Reef
• Current: Mild
• Sightings: Napoleon wrasse, huge schools of hunting trevallies and emperor fish.

Koh Tachai

Dive sites around Koh Tachai are teeming with marine life; its deep waters and strong currents bring food and attract fish of all sizes. Expect schooling fish hunting together as well as beautiful coral gardens with all their inhabitants.
• Diving: Pinnacle
• Current: Mild
• Sightings: Jenkins ray, black tip sharks and a large school of chevron barracudas.

Deep 6

Here you will find all Similans’ usual suspects accompanied by coral gardens and huge granite boulders, divers can expect impressive underwater action and big pelagics.
• Diving: Reef
• Current: Mild
• Sightings: Eagle rays, whitetip sharks, turtles, octopus and large trevallies.
